We are finite beings. Our days on this earth are limited, and whether we like to think about it or not, we are all going to die one day.
Every moment that passes will never come back. You cannot “reset” your week, or “redo” your life.
Many of us lose sight of this reality, either because we are so caught up in our lives that we never get a chance to slow down and reflect, or because we simply prefer to live in denial and to not think about it.
Many cutlures teach us that death is a “taboo”, a sad milestone that we should avoid dealing with at all costs, until we have to.
Unfortunately, this has led us to live unfulfilling lives, causing us to chase the wrong things. Money, beauty, status, power, fame- we are each running behind one of those things, wasting our days and years, thinking that they will bring us happiness and peace.
But that’s not our purpose. We are meant to be on a journey, and this is not our final stop.
If we take a look at our lives from that perspective, would we continue to chase the same things? Would we spend 10-11 hours in the office, day in and day out, burning out for that promotion? Would we spend countless hours watching Netflix instead of doing something productive? Would we spend our time obsessing over how to look younger, in an attempt to delay our aging process, because we can’t deal with the fact that we are growing older?
Or would we spend time discovering our purpose and passion, and ensuring that we do what we were placed on this Earth to do? Would we spend more time with our family and loved ones, instead of wallowing in regret that our time with them was cut short? Would we try to create a better tomorrow for the generations that will come after us?
Our lives are passing by, second by second, minute by minute, like the grains of sand in an hourglass. When your time is up, what is it that you want to have achieved? Look at life from that perspective, and you will finally be able to align your priorities in a way that fulfils your true purpose.
Your fellow finite human.
Wonderful insight. I like the idea of looking at Life with the perspective of what should be achieved. This is an excellent example of focussed approach to goals and can be replicated to all aspects of life (and death) ❣️
